Knowing how to care for your indoor plants can go way beyond just being a hobby. There are many successful companies and businesses that specialize in interiorscaping. There is so much that goes into these companies that we do not realize! All of the hard work and dedication these companies put in are the reason many hotels, offices, malls, etc. are beautifully interior scaped. Starting a business from the ground up can’t be easy, but there are so many techniques that I would use if I were to start my own business.

First of all, I would get experience! I know in order to learn more and learn all the ropes of an interiorscape company, I need to watch and learn from someone who is in the actual business. Whether it be a paid or a non paid internship, I would definitely plan on getting the experience. Next, I would work on networking, traveling, and getting the word out about my company. This is one of the most important things you can do. You can’t start a company if you’re not up and moving and bringing the ideas that you have to life. Not only is the quality and quantity of your plants important, but the attitude you bring into your business is how you get customers. You can have the prettiest and most extravagant plants, but if your attitude is the exact opposite of that, people will not want to buy from you again. If I were starting up my own interiorscape business, I would most definitely need to be organized 24/7. Being in charge of sales, design, installation, plant care, and bookkeeping is a lot to do! I know if my business were to grow, I would hire people to work for me to specifically help in those areas.

Something that sounds so fun and interesting to me is green walls. I have been reading and learning about them. A green wall is the use of plants in a positive space dominant, vertical plane. They can vary and they can be a very simple design, or it can be a more complex design. How do they work? Some simple approaches involve pockets or rings where potted plants are suspended and secured into the frame. This allows a wall to become masses with multiple plants at once. When it comes to watering these plants, they may be manually watered. But if the plants and the wall seem to be bigger, you could use an irrigation system which is the much easier and efficient way. Watering can be tricky with these walls. One of the best ways to go about it is by putting plants that can survive with a lot of water at the bottom of the wall, and plants that should not receive that much water at the top. The reason for this is because due to gravity moving the water down the wall, it will all end up at the bottom of the wall with the plants that enjoy a lot of it which is perfect.

Whether used on internal or external walls, vertical green walls can lead to saving energy, which is a significant benefit for businesses. Often, green walls can help cool the air through the process of evapotranspiration. This can be ideal during hot summer months when energy use from climate control requirements are high. Living walls can also act as an additional layer of insulation, keeping preventing hot air from coming in or cool air going out in the summer which is amazing. These walls not only add a beautiful aesthetic to space, but they have many great benefits.
